Whether it’s on a walk in the bush, a paddle on a lake, or a ride through the countryside, I bear witness to nature and its delicate balance of opposites. I am intrigued by the ever-present sense of grace that exists amidst the harmony and the discord, and the order and chaos. Simple changes in light and the time of day are all that’s needed to give me a new perspective on a familiar scene.
I apply acrylic to canvas, remaining open to what the paint and process can teach me. I tend to work in series to fully explore a technique and idea. Each successive series contains threads of paintings that came before.
In my recent work I explore surface and depth of field, applying layers of colour before and after a layer of latex resist. This technique allows me to create movement and atmosphere with clean, decisive lines that lie on the surface. At the same time, you are encouraged to go deeper into the landscape to the scene beyond.
Over the years, I have continued to tend and nurture my creative muse through music, visual art and teaching.
In the early 80's, I graduated with a three-year diploma in Visual Arts from David Thompson University Centre, an extension of Selkirk College in Nelson, B.C. I then worked as a 'hanger', installing art in corporate offices for art consultants in Toronto, as a house painter, and as a scenic painter in Vancouver, while continuing my studio work.
I traded my paint brushes for a guitar in the '90's and embraced song writing and performing as a more direct way of sharing my world with others. I have always thought of my songs as musical pictures and continue to write, record and perform solo and as part of a trio called Frida’s Brow.
A few years ago I moved from Ottawa to Almonte, a small town 40 minutes west of the city. My daily walks on the edge of town, a closer relationship with the natural world and a greater sense of 'space' at all levels led me back to painting. In my re-emergence as a painter, I have found the natural world to be the best teacher on many levels.
I hope my work instills you with a sense of wonder, and challenges you to look, with fresh eyes, at the earth beneath your feet.
